Kosta Boda Art Hotel, Sweden - "Glass Hotel"
Foto Source: http://www.kostabodaarthotel.se/en/press/image-bank.html
DESCRIPTION:
Right now, the construction workers in Kosta are putting the finishing touches to a glass hotel, glistening with art glass inside and out. The Kosta Boda glass artists have designed different parts of the hotel, as well as one hotel room wing each.
– We are building a unique hotel that will be an experience for all the senses. The glass artists contributing to this project are world famous, and this summer we welcome visitors from Sweden and the rest of the world to visit the ”kingdom of crystal,” says Mattias Landgren, Kosta Boda Art Hotel CEO.
104 rooms decorated by glass artists
The Kosta Boda Art Hotel will be 10 000 m2 large and will have 104 rooms and glass suites, all decorated by the world famous Kosta Boda artists. The end result is rooms of very different character, from Ludvig Löfgren’s skull decorated rock n’ roll quarters to Ulrika Hydman-Vallien’s classic tulip ornamented accommodation.
In the middle of the hotel, a large spa section is taking form around a Kjell Engman designed pool with shimmering blue glass tiles and a glass exhibition at the bottom. And if you want to, you can borrow a pair of goggles and have a closer look at the artworks.
The other parts of the spa are designed by Åsa Jungnelius, Elle Interiör Designer of the Year 2008 winner and Dagens Nyheter Cultural Award nominee. Jungnelius’ characteristic artworks of lipsticks and nail polish bottles in pastels and gold give your beauty and spa treatments an extra dimension. The artists contributing to the Kosta Boda Art Hotel are: Anna Ehrner, Kjell Engman, Åsa Jungnelius, Ludvig Löfgren, Ulrica Hydman-Vallien, Bertil Vallien and Göran Wärff.

25hours, Germany - "Levis-themed Hotel"
Foto Source: http://www.25hours-hotels.com/frankfurt2/hotel/gallery.php
DESCRIPTION:
The world's first Levi's hotel unzips its door in Germany. Tailored by Levi's - the name above the door says it all!
The hotel's 78 rooms on six floors are all dominated by different shades of denim blue, with red doorframes signifying the 501 red label. The theme for the rooms is the history of Levi's, with each floor showing how the jeans maker has shaped our lifestyles, from the 1930s to the '80s. Guests can choose between a bright and lively room or a moodier decor, and rooms come in M, L or XL size. While you might find the "M" a tight fit compared to its Thai equivalent, it's roomy by Frankfurt standards. L is snug and the XL studio gives you space to breathe easy. And even though it's a journey into the past, each room is well equipped with modern technology including a flat-screen TV, iPod sound system and free WiFi. The coolest feature for this visitor though was the pair of jeans from the room's era - now that's stylish! Staircases are painted to mimic the displays of jeans and clothes you find in boutiques. And just when you think it can't get any funkier, you find the Gibson Music Jam Room in the cellar, where guests can live out their rock-star fantasies on the piano, guitars and drums. Skihaus, Swiss Alps - "Portable Ski Vacation Accomodation"
DESCRIPTION:
SkiHaus was conceived while skiing late and high in the Alps: evening sun, a beautiful, clear, starlit night, twinkling lights of the village in the valley, a reluctance to return: Would it be possible to stay here in the beautiful, cold silence?
The SkiHaus serves as a mobile alpine hut or a ‘hard tent’. The lightweight, all-aluminium structure weighs only 315 kg and is designed to be lifted into position by helicopter.
It is well-insulated using lightweight aviation materials and has a self-sufficient energy system powered by solar and wind generators.
Since 1992 the SkiHaus has been tested by the team together with mountain guides and helicopter engineers at varying altitudes in the Swiss Alps up to 3901m (next to the ‘Kleines Matterhorn’). It will be used further by the local mountain guide centres for ski touring, climbing, guide training, ski races and medical positions.
Besides its rescue and safety functions, the SkiHaus is an architectural vehicle with which to explore the third dimension and the wide clear spaces on top of the mountains. It has been situated on the Swiss-Italian ridge close to the ‘Kleines Matterhorn” since May 2004 and is currently used as shelter and accommodation for skiers and climbers. The unit includes a kitchen.

Travelodge, UK - "Hotel made out of recycled Containers"
Foto Source: http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/08/22/travelodge-shipping-container-hotel/
DESCRIPTION:
Travelodge recently opened a hotel in Uxbridge, England that is constructed entirely from prefabricated shipping containers. The completed design uses eighty-six containers of various sizes that were retrofitted into bedrooms and bolted together onsite. The exterior has been clad and fitted with windows, thus converting the assemblage into a seamless 120-bedroom hotel. Verbus Systems estimates that the structure’s prefab composition saved the hotel chain more than half a million pounds and at least 10 weeks of construction. Verbus Systems claims that the hotel’s modular construction makes its construction 40-60% quicker than traditional building methods, plus it doesn’t require complicated construction processes or specialized labor, which helps to reduce cost. They also quote a 70% reduction in on-site waste. The interiors are indistinguishable from other Travelodge hotels, and after construction, the exterior betrays nothing. Travelodge plans to follow up with a 307-room version at Heathrow. They expect to save up to 10 million pounds (18.6 million dollars) a year on hotel development by using this new method. Hotel Puerta America Madrid, Spain - "Unique Hotel by 19 famous Designers"
Foto Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ramonduran/2387594049/
Foto Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/greenshines/296521023/
DESCRIPTION:
While the facade is the work of the French architect Jean Nouvel, each of the hotel's 12 floors - from the elevator lobbies down to the blankets and bathrobes - has been conceived by powerhouse architects and design studios, among them Arata Isozaki, Norman Foster, Marc Newson, Ron Arad, Richard Gluckman, Javier Mariscal, Victorio & Lucchino and Zaha Hadid. With public spaces like the Black Tears restaurant designed by Christian Liaigre and the underground garage by Teresa Sapey, the Puerta América can bill itself as "12 floors with 19 stars." With 308 standard rooms, 22 junior suites and 12 suites, the hotel is hardly "boutique," but the mix of design styles is as aesthetically engaging as it is disorienting. The facade, covered with a rainbow of vinyl panels - which are, in fact, a clever system of window screens that modulate incoming light - gives a hint of the diversity inside. Hotel Umaid Bhawan Palace, India - "Authentic Royal Palace Hotel"
Foto Source: http://www.forbestraveler.com/resorts-hotels/castles-royal-residences-slide.html

DESCRIPTION:
H.H. Maharaja Sahib of Jodhpur, India has some stories of his own. He lives with his family in one wing of Umaid Bhawan, an opulent 347-room sandstone palace, while the rest of the palace and 26 acres of gardens are open to guests. His decision to open the palace, completed in the 1940’s as the last great residence of a Maharaja, was similarly due to an overabundance of space for the family’s modern lifestyle. “The palace was built to hold official functions, events and parties,” he said, “so it was ideally suited for the hospitality industry.” But the Maharaja and family didn’t move out; they continue to live and hold traditional festivals in their section of the palace, sometimes inviting hotel guests to participate. And he will, with a prior request, meet with guests to tell them about the palace and the family. But does he ever mind that strangers are tromping through the family digs? He, like the other royals, insists that he doesn’t. “We still see it as our family palace,” he said. And opening it to the public has its advantages, not all of them financial. “This great palace was always intended to be fully utilized, and one can better enjoy it this way. The whole place has come alive again.” Source: forbestraveler.com

De Vrouwe van Stavoren, Holland - "Wine Barrel Hotel"
Foto Source: http://www.hotel-vrouwevanstavoren.nl/Wijnvaten.htm
DESCRIPTION:
This hotel for winelovers is located in Stavoren, a very old port in northern Holland. The rooms where you sleep are in 15,000 litre wine barrels. There are four of them, each created from Swiss drums that used to contain Beaujolais wine from the French chateau area.
The rooms look quite cozy, wood panelled, of course, with room for two narrow beds. No comment on the smell in the room; foxy, fruity, but all with plenty of body. Maybe you chose by flavour: red or white. Each one comes complete with a t.v., radio shower and toilet for this rare wine treat. There is a porch/ sitting room attached so things aren't quite as cramped as they appear.n Source: treehugger.com
